Pumps and Compressors

Corken’s D-style oil-free reciprocating compressors utilize two sets of V-ring packing per packing rod that form a single barrier to external leakage. The lower packing set has an adjustable packing screw that is used to maintain maximum sealing performance throughout the life of the packing. The distance piece has its own line connections that can be that can be padded, purged, or vented. This allows you to choose the best method of containment for your application. For added convenience purge kits with all of the accessories needed to control the purging or padding of the distance piece are available.

Since there is no piston rod over travel between the crankcase and compression chamber, all D-Style compressors deliver oil-free gas compression. The only exception is the model D891 compressor which is not oil-free. D-Style reciprocating compressors are used when oil-free gas is required and leakage containment is desirable.

D-Style industrial compressors are compatible with a wide variety of hazardous and volatile gases such as natural gas, nitrogen, sulfur hexafluoride, propane, butadiene, helium, and industrial ammonia.

Each compresssor is available with a standard mounting or we can custom engineer a compressor package for you. We now offer an ASME B31.3 – 2012 piping option for all of our compressor packages and skids.

SCM-Model Side Channel Pump Overview

The SCM-model side channel pump is a sealless magnetic drive design and is recommended for pumping hazardous, toxic, foul smelling, or other difficult-to-seal thin liquids. Since the side channel technology is a self-priming design, it is ideal for applications with a low net positive suction head (NPSH). Additionally, the multi-stage configuration enables the side channel pump to reach higher than normal differential pressures. The feature makes it a great fit for high different applications like propane carousel cylinder filling station, aerosol filling stations, vaporizer feed, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) applications.

Suitable for liquefied gases like ammonia, pentane, propane, propylene, propylene oxide, vinly toluene, and liquids with low vapory pressures like gasoline, glycol, methanol, mineral spirits, naptha, water, soda ash, solvents, and many more. Available with ANSI or DIN flange connections only.

Operating Specifications

  • Flow rates up to 114 gpm (431 l/min)
  • Working pressures up to 580 psi (40 bar)
  • Differential pressures up to 250 psi (17.2 bar)
  • Temperature range: -40 to 428 °F (-40 to 220 °C)
  • Viscosities up to 1,050 SSU (230 cSt)

The side channel pump is a unique pumping technology. Since the impeller makes regenerative passes through the liquid, it is similar to a regenerative turbine. However, the actual design of the impeller and casing and the principles of operation differ greatly. Unlike other pump designs, the side channel pump can accommodate the transfer of liquid and gas mixtures with up to 50% entrained gas. This feature greater reduces the possibility air or vapor locking that can occur in other pump designs. A special suction impeller lowers the NPSH requirement for the pump. Corken offers several models of side channel pumps for wide range of differential pressures and capacities. Side channel pumps are available with mechanical seal or sealless (magnetic drive) option.

Side channel pumps perform well in high differential pressure applications like carrousel filling stations, autogas filling stations that use below ground tanks, aerosol filling stations, and boiler feed. Suitable for propane, butane, ammonia, water, refrigerants, and many more.

Chemical plants convert oil, natural gas, air, water, metals and minerals into chemical products. Chemicals that are derived from petroleum or natural gas are called petrochemicals. These chemicals are typically extracted during the refining process as crude oil and natural gas liquids are cracked or distilled. Petrochemicals can be divided into two common classes: olefins (butadiene, ethylene, and propylene) and aromatic (benzene, toluene, and xylene isomers). Oil refineries produce olefins and aromatics by fluid catalytic cracking of petroleum fractions. Chemical plants take natural gas liquids (ethane, propane and butane) from a gas processing plant and use a steam cracking process to produce olefins. Aromatics are produced by catalytic reforming of naphtha. Olefins and aromatics are the basic components for a wide range of materials such as solvents, detergents, and adhesives. Olefins are the basis for polymers and oligomers used in plastics, resins, fibers, elastomers, lubricants, and gels. Polymers and plastics such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate, polystyrene and polycarbonate make up the vast majority of the chemical industry’s output worldwide.

Chemicals are used to manufacture numerous consumer products (health care, pharmaceuticals and electronics) and play an important part in the agriculture (pesticides), manufacturing (solvents), construction (roofing materials), and service industries (cleaning/janitorial supplies). Corken’s reciprocating gas compressors, sliding vane pumps, turbine pumps, and side channel pumps are used to load and unload all of these chemicals when they are stored and transported. When the pressures or capacities of your application are beyond the capabilities of our vertical compressors, Corken’s horizontal compressors are your next option. Unlike Corken’s vertical reciprocating compressors, the horizontal compressor uses a segmented purge packing design to seal the piston rod.

Depending on the needs of your application, Corken offers single- or two-stage design in a lubricated, non-lubricated, single or double-acting configuration. Each style has different options for the piston rod packing and distance piece. The style of the compressor required depends on the demands of your application. If oil-free gas and leakage containment are not critical, then a plain style is right for you. Most propane, butane and ammonia applications require a plain style compressor. In contrast if oil-free gas and leakage containment are a high priority, then a T-Style oil-free compressor is the best choice.

Our compressors are available with a standard mounting or we can custom engineer a compressor package for you. We now offer an ASME B31.3 – 2012 piping option for all of our compressor packages and skids.

Each product group below is designed for a specific level of leakage containment. To find a compression solution for your application, select from one of the product groups listed below.

Many liquefied gas piping systems do not provide ideal net positive suction head (NPSH) conditions for liquid pumps. As a result the poor NPSH conditions lead to excessive pump maintenance. Since reciprocating gas compressors are only exposed to vapors, they are not affected by poor NPSH conditions. Many liquefied gas pressurized tanks such as tank cars and buried tanks have top unloading connections. A reciprocating compressor is the perfect solution for transferring liquids to and from tanks of this type as well as vapor recovery.

Corken offers a variety of piston rod packing configurations, distance piece options, and oil-free gas compression for wide range of industrial gases. The D-Style is a double packed reciprocating compressor that has one distance piece and offers a high level of leakage containment. However, our T-Style design is a triple packed compressor that has two distance pieces that offer the highest level of leakage containment for today’s industrial gases. Depending on the needs of your application, each distance piece can be pressurized, purged, or vented. Both styles are available in single- and two-stage, air or water cooled, and single and double-acting versions. Lubricated and non-lubricated versions are also available.

Our industrial compressors are compatible with a wide variety of hazardous, volatile, toxic, and corrosive gases such as chlorine, vinyl chloride, methyl chloride, sulfur dioxide, butadiene, hydrogen, helium and many more. Each compresssor is available with a standard mounting or we can custom engineer a compressor package for you. Reciprocating Compressors (Horizontal)

When the pressures or capacities of your application are beyond the capabilities of a vertical reciprocating compressor, a horizontal reciprocating compressor is your next option. Depending on your pressure requirements, Corken offers single- and two-stage models that can be configured in either a plain style or an oil-free T-Style design. The plain style horizontal is a single packed reciprocating compressor with minimum leakage containment and is not oil free. The T-Style is a triple packed and provides maximum leakage containment and oil-free gas compression. With a triple packed configuration, there is no piston rod over travel or oil carryover so you always get oil-free gas compression.

Liquid Transfer Solutions

Corken offers a wide variety of industrial reciprocating compressors for liquid transfer and vapor recovery. Liquid transfer and vapor recovery applications can be found at tank car unloading terminals, chemical plants, manufacturing plants, and many more industrial sites. Corken’s vertical reciprocating compressors are commonly used in stationary, mobile or transport applications involving liquid transfer and vapor recovery A compressor can be mounted a trailer or transport and used for tank truck unloading applications.

Pressure Boosting Solutions

Corken reciprocating compressors are often used in gas and air boosting applicaitions. When a natural gas well has reached the end of it’s life, the gas pressure begins to drop. Many times a Corken compressor is used to boost the gas pressure flowing to the pipeline. In air boosting applications, the vast majority of plant-air systems are capable of generating up to 125 psig (8.6 bar). Special considerations within a plant may require air — oil free or lubricated — at higher pressures. A Corken air booster compressor takes plant air and increases it up to 1,080 psig (74.4 bar). The high pressure plant air is used to operate hand tools and air operated equipment within the facility.

T-Style Oil-Free Reciprocating Compressor Overview

Corken’s T-style horizontal reciprocating gas compressors have three sets of segmented packing per piston rod that form two distance pieces. Depending on your application requirements, the distance pieces can be pressurized, purged or vented. T-Styles are available with two packing configurations that deliver maximum leakage containment and oil-free gas compression. Unlike Corken’s vertical reciprocating compressors that use a V-ring packing design, the horizontal compressors use a segmented packing design to seal the piston rod.

The T-Style horizontal compressors are oil free so there’s no contamination of the process gas stream. Since the distance between the packing is greater than the stroke of the compressor, there’s no rod over travel or oil carryover. In other words, the portion of the piston rod that comes into contact with the first set of inner packing packing will never reach the seond set of middle packing. Likewise, the portion of the piston rod that comes into contact with the second set of middle packing will never reach the third set of outer packing. In the event that oil gets past the inner packing set, the oil wiper rings keep the oil from reaching the outer distance piece. This feature allows the compressor to supply oil-free gas whether it’s being used as a simple gas booster or for vacuum service. T-style compressors are typically used in toxic and corrosive applications where oil-free gas and maximum leakage containment are critical.

Plain-Style Reciprocating Compressor Overview

Corken’s plain style horizontal reciprocating compressors only have one set of segmented packing per piston rod and no distance piece. The plain style reciprocating compressor is not oil free and has a basic packing arrangement with either a standard or purge packing configuration that delivers a minimum level of leakage containment. Unlike Corken’s vertical reciprocating compressors that use a V-ring packing design, the horizontal compressors use segmented packing to seal the piston rod. The standard packing configuration uses segmented packing only while the purge packing configuration uses a combination of purge and segmented packing.

If oil-free gas compression and maximum leakage containment are required, Corken’s T-Style horizontal compressors are recommended. Plain style compressors are typically used in non-toxic and non-corrosive applications where oil-free gas and leakage containment are not critical. LPG (propane & butane), agricultural ammonia, and natural gas applications are a few examples.
